Upper Down – A small mountain realm between the old Northern Provinces and the old Central Provinces of the Elestian Empire. Historically part of the Duchy of Down, it gained independence with the collapse of the Elestian Empire, splitting away from what became the kingdoms of Greater Down and Lesser Down. Upper Down sits astride one of only three passes through the mountains, but its most significant attribute is that it remains the last realm still governed by Masters and Makers.

The Elestian Empire – Sometimes referred to as The First Empire, the Elestians governed vast tracts of the continent for almost a thousand years. Ruled by an elite aristocracy of Masters and Makers, it eventually collapsed after prolonged rebellions and uprisings. Its collapse led to widespread massacres of Masters and Makers, reducing their numbers until few were left alive. The old calendar system ended upon the death of the last Emperor, and the years are now dated from this momentous event. Fall Seldom Kings begins in Year 107, i.e. one hundred and seven years since the fall of the Elestian Empire.

The Sanctian Empire – Centred around the island of Sanctos, the Sanctian Empire arose from the ashes of the Elestian Empire. Sometimes referred to as The Second Empire, the Sanctians have been re-conquering many of the old provinces, and re-uniting them under its rule. The Sanctian Emperor views Masters and Makers as wicked and blasphemous, and he has pledged to hunt down and execute the last remaining survivors.

The Westlanders – Hailing originally from the great plains to the west of the old Northern Provinces, the Westlanders swept through those provinces following the collapse of the Elestian Empire. Seen as a primitive, violent people by the citizens of the old Central Provinces, the Westlanders are mistrusted and feared. Known for their worship of the three moons as much as for their raiding and brigandage, the Westlanders are unrivalled in warfare.

Masters – Men who possess the ability to transmute elements.

Makers – Women who possess the ability to summon objects.
